street signs

Ok I know what you’re thinking: how could there be anything interesting about street signs?  Well bear with me.

I had a revelation recently.  I’ve been driving for more than half my life and I just figured what the “UNEVEN LANES” sign means.  I had always thought it meant the lanes were different widths while they were getting everything re-paved and may not have measured the lane widths exactly.  No no no.  What it means is one or more lanes is higher off the ground than another.  You can probably guess *how* I came to this realization: while I was changing lanes and had to navigate an approximate 1 inch difference in road height.

Said sign also prompted a question: why make a sign a diamond?  It’s not a fancy shape, it’s just a square sign that got a bit tipsy.  So I looked it up.  Click Here to read it yourself, but basically the shapes/colors are different to be a quick indicator to drivers to make processing the information easier.  Makes sense right?  Pfft, I didn’t need some article to explain it. ;)
